Wednesday Giveaway: The Drifter DVD

In the summer of 2008, iconic surfer and former Pipe Master Rob Machado flew to Indonesia to experience a different kind of surf trip.

The Drifter

A journey that would take him way beyond his comfort zone, to the point where he could finally be alone with his thoughts, his desires and the empty perfection of an unnamed Indian Ocean reef. What did he discover? You never stop dreaming.

Mustache November (Movember)

Movember is an annual, month-long celebration of the moustache, highlighting men’s health issues – specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

movember_top

To date, Movember has raised $47 million globally making it the world’s largest charity event for men. Significantly, awareness of men’s health issues has improved with Movember helping to spread important health messages directly to millions of Mo Bros & Sistas around the world.

We challenge you to join us in changing the face of men’s health.

The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia.  The guys behind it joked about 80s fashion and decided it was time to bring the moustache back.  In order to justify their Mos (Australian slang for moustache), they used their new looks to raise money for prostate cancer research… never dreaming that facial hair would ultimately lead to a global movement that would get men talking about a taboo subject – their health.

A Mo Bro starts Movember – the month formerly known as November – clean shaven, and grows a moustache all month long, garnering support from friends and family in the form of donations.  What’s more, a Mo Bro is a walking billboard for the cause as his new look opens the door for him to talk about cancers affecting men – making the moustache a symbol, much like the pink ribbon is for breast cancer.  Each Movember culminates in a Gala Partè in major cities around the globe where Mo Bros dress up to match their Mo, channeling the likes of Tom Selleck, Gandhi and Ron Burgandy, vying for the ultimate accolade:  Man of Movember.

This Movember, the money raised in the U.S. will be split between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation will use the money raised by Movember to fund: research to find better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer.

The Lance Armstrong Foundation will use the money raised by Movember to fund:
• the LIVESTRONG Young Adult Alliance program which has the goal of improving survival rates and quality of life for young adults with cancer between the ages of 15 and 40.
• research initiatives to further understand the biology of adolescent and young adult cancers.

Grease not Gas

The first time I heard about bio diesel was back in my college days in the one place where you would actually hear about these things, Santa Cruz Ca. I didn’t really know anything about it, but the idea of driving around without having to pay for gas sounded pretty good to me (more beer money).

shapeimage_2

To be honest I still don’t know too much about it, but after watching this cool interview I have a better idea of what is going on in the world of bio diesel cars, or buses for that matter. Mike Parziale has a pretty cool thing going with his Grease not Gas program and the Grease Bus.

A ten dollar ride for a four hour bus ride from Portland to Mt. Hood. Not too shabby. Check out the interview and become a little more informed.

Yeomans and Merle on Surfline/Surfermag

Last week Socal saw a super fun combination of swells that provided everyone in town the opportunity for some photo incentive. Killer Dana team riders Nate Yeomans and Jesse Merle Jones both got some play on Surfline and Surfermag.

Also, check out this huge rodeo flip that Nate almost rode out of during a similar session last week.

Team Rider: Nolan Houghton

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Meet Mr.Nolan Houghton, he’s an 8 year old ripper from Placentia, California! You’ve probably seen him shredding at his favorite skateparks in Brea, and San Clemente. He also skates in Morrow Bay, Costa Mesa (the Volcom park), Vans at the Block, Fullerton….pretty much anywhere he can get those little wheels to roll!

Nolan’s been zipping around on a skateboard since the day he could walk, and watch out cause he’s movin up in the Skate World (next stop, Pro Status). Just recently Nolan won 2nd place in the 8-10yr old division of the San Clemente Open… and next year he’s shooting for 1st!

Nolan’s favorite decks to ride are Flip and Creature mini’s, and he’s a big fan of Ace Trucks. His favorite pro is Bucky Lasek and he definitely wants to be a pro skater when he grows up. His older brother, Gavin also skates and loves to carve and skate oldschool style.
Get to know Nolan a little better:
Alley: Hey Nolan, we just watched your latest video and were totally impressed with your skating. Who taught you how to Skate?
Nolan: Nobody. I practice a lot at Brea and San Clemente skateparks. I watch a lot of skaters to learn new tricks and stalls, and then I try them.

Alley: Looking out onto the horizon…. is there one particular trick that you are trying to master before your next competition?

Nolan: A hardflip. Actually, all new tricks.

Alley: Ok our next question is a 3 part question surrounding the subject of girls. 1.) We were wondering if you see a good amount of girl skateboarders at all the different skateparks you go to? 2.) Are there more girl skateboarders at certain parks compared to other ones you visit? Which ones?! 3.) Do you have a girlfriend? And if yes, does she skateboard?

Nolan: 1.) Sometimes I see one or two girls. 2.) I see the most at San Clemente. There’s one girl there that is really good. 3.) No, but if I did she would have to skateboard like Cara-Beth Burnside.

Alley: We’re impressed with your skating and were wondering if there were any other sports that you enjoy besides skating?

Nolan: Soccer and baseball, but mostly skating!

Alley: And last but not least, we were curious to know what superpower you would have if you could be given one?

Nolan: Super speed on my skateboard. – I could get huge air off a quarterpipe and do tricks way up in the air.

Big ups to Nolan for taking the time to let us interview him. Can’t wait to skate with him.

Until then,

Tom From Holland

It was about midnight on Sunday when I got the text message from Lounge, “be at my house at 7am.” I wasn’t sure of the reason why, only that I was to bring the camera and be ready to shoot.

My first thought was that some local secret spot must have been firing the last couple days and he wanted to get some footage. Then I realized there was no swell in the water and ruled out the possibility of scoring an epic, rarely breaking wave.

I arrived at his house full of curiosity about what we were going to shoot. As I sat on his couch while his two little groms wrecked havoc around me, he told me a story about a friend he had met in the water a little over 8 years ago.
air guy

Being the only two people in the line up, Lounge started talking to the unfamiliar face. As it turned out, the stranger was in town from Holland, gearing up for a long road trip down through Mexico and Central America. Lounge, being an avid Mexico traveler himself, immediately dove into conversation about the many places and people he had experienced in his travels through the area.

Over the next month, Tom from Holland camped out in front of Lounge’s house in preparation for his trip. Since he embarked eight years ago, the two had not seen each other since.

I finally realized why I was sitting on Lounge’s couch at seven in the morning, Tom was back in town. Needless to say, my level of curiosity went up a bit. I knew that people surfed in Holland, but I wasn’t aware of the roots that the surfing lifestyle has planted there.

We followed Tom around all morning, checking the waves and talking surfing. We finally found some rideable surf and got into a few waves before Tom headed out on the next leg of his trip.

Lounge pointed it out best when he said that even over the eight year span when they hadn’t seen each other, they hadn’t missed a beat because of their connection through surfing. I’m sure the next time Tom is in town, it will be the same case for me.

New Face of the ASP

Picture 1

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) recently announced some serious changes for the 2010 season. Among them is the decision to decrease the number of surfers from a field of 48 to 36, including wild cards.

This coincides with the way the world rankings will work. Rather than a separation between the CT and the QS, there will only be one system in which every event will count towards a surfer’s world ranking. This gives the potential for a QS surfer to enter in to the top 32 at any point in a season with good results on the QS.

Those are the basics of the major changes, but Brodie Carr explains it way better.

Whip It Contest! Fashion from the Film

The new movie Whip It from actress Drew Barrymore recently hit the theaters. Her directorial debut, this big hit, basically surrounds a Pageant Princess who turns into a rockin’ Roller Derby Doll. Is this film to be an  instant classic? Or does it  just look so good because of all the sexy Derby Gear and star power swirled in?

Whip-It-movie-poster-WEB

Full of class acts such as Juno’s Ellen Page , EVE, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Marcia Gay Harden, Jimmy Fallon and SNL’s Kristen Wiig. All whom are easily spotted in Fox Search light preview runs. This film has really turned the promotion on full blast. Kissing up to the press even through the pages of Marie Claire, for what seemed to be a provocative-promotional lip-lock.

As a moviegoer, you learn that too much advertising can be a huge red flag for any film to suck. So with that in mind I went to watched it first, to find out if all the key plot points were leaked out in the commercials (as usual) or if it this film should be rated Safe to Pay.Juliette-Lewis_Whip-it

Turns out, Whip It was tight! Male and Female alike, the audience rolled out of theater grinning. And not just because we all scored  free sneak preview t-shirts. Action, heart and humor, it had a little something for everyone. If not anything else, by the end of the movie you will definitely want to strap a pair on.

The memorable players in the film had a lot of personal style. Working deconstructed throwbacks like off the shoulder looks, plaids, animal prints, fishnets and tons of boy tees. I liked the idea so much, I started getting together a Roller Derby name of my own. Straight from a 70’s style Western, I went retro with a pair of RVCA Trevinal Boardshorts to double as old- school skate shorts, and cruise by the name Calamity Jane-Doe. So fair I am finding that everything looks cuter with a pair of rollerskates. So here are some looks from the film to help you get started with your Derby Identity.

Whip-it-Contest

For the ideal Roller Derby look of your own, you are also going to need a kick ass persona! As well as some colorful tube socks!

To assist your start, we have a CONTEST going on, to find the Best Derby Name!

1. You send us your Rolly Derby alias name (Smashley Simpson, Rosa Sparks, or Shenita Stretcher etc.)
2. We pick the 2 best names and the winners will receive a pair of amazing Derby Boardshorts and socks.

If your name is the best, you can choose from (size 3) Lost reversible boardshorts or Hurley White side zip boardshorts, plus a pair of the matching blue socks. Runner up also receives (size 3) retro boardies and a pair of socks.

No pain, no gain! You gotta work it to be the baddest Derby Broad.

KD Welcome’s Alan Young to the Team

Alan Young

We all knew it was time. Something fresh in our skate department needed to go down. What better way than to welcome a new member to the team?

Enter Alan Young, an insane all around skater. From street to transition to vert, Alan pretty much handles it all with impeccable style. Tweaked grabs, critical transitions and technical prowess all come together in his skating.

When we finally got some time to head down south to shoot, Alan was ready to get it done. First stop was a pretty sick park in O-side that suited Alan’s versatility. After tearing a couple lines through this concrete paradise, it was time to step it up a bit at the Birdhouse warehouse.

Alan Young from killerdana on Vimeo.

We packed it up and headed over with refreshments for the boys (too bad they were all in meetings). Alan; who used to skate quite a bit of vert in his earlier days and has recently picked it back up, proceeded to launch himself into a flurry of tweaked indy, stalefish and tail grabs while showing his tech side in the street section.

It was a pretty impressive first impression and for a couple hours of shooting, he nailed some solid clips. Definitely check back for more sessions with the newest addition to the Killer Dana skate team. Peep the clip.
