We just had one of the most beautiful weekends ever… and frankly, it was about time: after nearly 10 days of rain, my mind and my skin color were getting just as grey as the sky. I’ve always found it amazing how the weather can affect your overall health and mind state.
It felt so good to wake up this Saturday morning and to see the cloudless sky through my window. I had barely opened my eyes and my phone rang: “Vainui, it’s a beautiful day, let’s go surfing! I’ve just got all the reports and I know where it’s pumping: ____!!” (sorry about this, but I can’t write down the name of that spot : even though it is a break that every body knows, from locals to pro surfers, nobody wants to talk about it. Don’t ask me why, I don’t have a clue. That’s just the way it is!!).

I was like: “Okay, cool. But it’s Saturday, it‘s 7.00 am (some guys have a sense of humor), and I’m still in bed. Give me some time and I’ll meet you there later in the day.”
Just the time to drag myself out of bed, slowly eat breakfast, (can you tell I’m not a morning person?) pack my stuff, and I was on my way… when another friend of mine called me to go surfing some place else: “What to do? Aaaahhhh, life is definitely made of difficult choices.” After a few long minutes of hesitation, I decided to stick to my first plan. And I made the right decision: it was firing – crisp-blue walls of water breaking & rolling onto the sharp reef, one after another – with some of the best surfers of the island just ripping it up.
Yes, after so many days of rain, it was definitely an awesome day… and sometimes pictures say it all.
Enjoy,
Vainui

[...] I also remember what my friend Prisca Amaru told me after getting barreled on one of the meanest waves I know (where the reef is ABOVE the water surface – see my blog The Sun is Back in Tahiti): [...]
