Brand of the Month: History of Metal Mulisha

Posted by Kacee ON September 1, 2010 • MotoComment

Say hello to our Brand of the Month for September! Metal Mulisha is a bad ass motocross team that also has a clothing line! What began as a group of friends riding dirt bikes in Metal Mulisha gear and competing to see who could do the best tricks has grown into one of the most recognized and respected brands in action sports.

Started sometime around 1998 or 1999 by Brian Deegan and Larry Linkogle, the Metal Mulisha has grown into the biggest, best and most bad-ass Freestyle Motocross team in the world. Known for winning gold medals, breaking world records, and turning industry tradition upside down through the sport of freestyle motocross, pro riders Brian Deegan and Larry Linkogle launched Metal Mulisha Clothing in 1999.

Metal Mulisha’s winning form in freestyle competitions like the X Games has helped spread the brand’s message to a growing audience around the world.

Metal Mulisha speaks the language of nonconformity with distinctive apparel that includes graphic tees, jerseys, boardshorts, fleece, tanks, denim and accessories; and encourages guys and girls to “join the domination” and express their rebellious spirit and daring attitude. A familiar name at events such as the Red Bull X Fighters, Rock Star Mayhem Tour, and the Dew Tour, Metal Mulisha boasts an A-list roster of well-known athletes including founder Brian Deegan, creator of the “Mulisha Twist;” and highly decorated freestyle riders, Ronnie Faisst, Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, and the late Jeremy Lusk. Metal Mulisha has also formed partnerships with athletes including MMA fighters Renato “ Babalu” Sobral, Jason MacDonald and Dan Henderson, as well as metal band Machine Head.

Today, Metal Mulisha continues to fuel the rise of freestyle motocross, and is dedicated to improving guidelines for the sport. In 2009, Metal Mulisha established the LLF Lusk Legacy Foundation in an effort to promote safety in freestyle motocross after the passing of team rider, Jeremy Lusk.

The Metal Mulisha lifestyle continues to expand, launching product collaborations with major brands like Rock Star Energy and Etnies and introducing new product categories later this year. With strong distribution in the U.S., Canada, and Australia, Metal Mulisha can be found at over 2000 retailers worldwide.

Lucas Oil Motocross Championship

high point

Lucas Oil Motocross Championship stopped at the High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, PA on June 12. The weather played a crucial factor during the first 450 race. Starting with sun shine and clear visibility, the clouds rolled in half-way through the race. The winds picked up and the rain came down, making it difficult for the riders to adapt to the changing terrain. Riders were slipping out and puling off the track, separating the men from the boys. Ryan Dungey took the 450 overall and Tyla Rattray took the 250 overall.

Glen Helen U.S. GP Event This Weekend

Posted by Kacee ON May 26, 2010 • EventsMotoComment

The following is from Glen Helen Raceway…

When the U.S. Grand Prix motocross rolls into California’s historic Glen Helen Raceway this weekend, the Yamaha guys will be out in full force. According to the scoop by Motocross Action Magazine both the MotoConcepts Yamaha team and DNA Shred Stix/Star Yamaha racers will be on hand to uphold American honor. In the premiere MX1 class, MotoConcepts is sending Matt Goerke (who missed the SX season due to injury), Ryan Sipes and Kyle Chisholm to ride the 450s; along with Vince Friese who will race the 250F in the MX2 class. Young Friese has been training with Ryan Hughes (who is coming out of retirement to race at the USGP, see here) – who will fare better, the student or the master? Check out www.MotoConcepts.com for more details on the MotoConcepts riders.

A more international flavor will presented under the DNA Shred Stix/Star Yamaha banner as Seattle SX winner Broc Tickle will fly the Stars & Stripes, along with Ecuador’s Martin Davalos and British expatriate Max Antsie to sink their teeth into the MX2 class. “Star Racing has continued to prove to us that they have the vision and the desire to put the YZ250F on the podium,” says Yamaha Racing Manager Keith McCarty. “Star understands the Yamaha brand and consistently represents the brand in a positive and professional manner.” Click on www.starmotocross.com for details on Bobby Regan’s team.

“It is anybody’s guess in MX1,” says 1984 USGP winner and now Dunlop tire guy, Broc Glover. “Look for Tickle to well in the 250F class, depending on how well he does at the start.” Glover knows a thing or two about the GP and international competition, having won the Trans-USA series back in 1981, as well as being on the winning 1983 Motocross des Nations and 1983-84 Trophy des Nations teams. “Should have won the 1983 USGP as well but Hakan Carlquist beat me on overall time differential!” Glover knows that the European racers are the real deal and the trio of Marvin Masquin, Jefferey Herlings and Ken Roczen is going to be tough for anybody to beat. “All three of those guys are fast!”

No longer a teenager like Herlings and Roczen, Team KTM Red Bull rider Mike Alessi just celebrated his 22nd birthday. Mike’s girlfriend Danielle dealt up a casino theme for the occasion and several of the USGP riders were all-in for the festivities, including Broc Tickle, Kyle Chisholm and fellow Team Red Bull KTM racer Tommy Searle.

Speaking of Searle, did you happen to catch the YouTube video starring role for the English racer and his KTM compatriots? Click on www.youtube.com/. All we can say is “Braaap!”

More star power will be on hand at Malcolm Smith Motorsports as the dealership rolls out the red carpet for the current roster of GP riders from both MX1 and MX2, blasts from the past will be showing up to the Red Bull/KFROG radio USGP Fan Experience on Friday afternoon. The unique event is bringing American MX heroes like Doug Dubach, Broc Glover, Ricky Jonhson and Chuck Sun.

Fans can also see their favorite racers up close and personal in the USGP pits. The Pro Paddock will be open Saturday May 29 from 10am-6pm for the qualifiers and first moto of the FIM Veterans Cup race. For Sunday’s main event, the Pro Paddock will be open from 9am-6pm. Cost is only $30 for both days, plus admission. Children 6-12 get a reduced rate of $15, plus admission for both days.

Sidi steps up! Look for Sidi boot signage to line the track at the USGP. “Antonio Cairoli and Max Nagl are running 1-2 in the MX1 championship,” points out Motonation’s Bill Berroth (the Sidi importer for the U.S.). “It is no coincidence that the two front runners are kicking butt in their Sidi Crossfires!” Sidi sponsors all the GPs in Europe and will have their same signage trackside at Glen Helen.

The next round of Golden Tickets has been drawn in the cross-promotion deal between Glen Helen and Michael Gaughan’s South Point Casino in Las Vegas. This week’s winner are as Colin McCaughey from Perth, Australia, and Timothy Scott from Torrance, California. A total of eight Grand Prize packages will be will be awarded via random continuing through the May 29-30 USGP weekend. Each Golden Ticket entitles the winners to a two-night stay at South Point Hotel, dinner for two at the Silverado Steakhouse and a pair of South Point show tickets. Check the Glen Helen Raceway website to see the winners drawn on 5/10/10, 5/17/10, 5/24/10 and 5/31/10.

Cairoli and Musquin Top Mantova GP

Taking victory at the Grand Prix of Lombardia, Antonio Cairoli wrote a new page in Motocross history as he collected the maiden Grand Prix win of a 350cc machine in the likes of the KTM 350 SX-F. Clement Desalle and Max Nagl completed the MX1 podium.Marvin Musquin took his fourth consecutive heat win to win the Grand Prix from Ken Roczen and Jeffrey Herlings.

Mats Nilsson dominated round one of the FIM Veterans’ World Cup by winning both heats. Hendrickx and Lheriteau completed the podium.

The maiden edition of the EMX 125cc European series kicked off at Mantova and saw the victory of French Jordi Tixier.

ciairoli

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX1’s Cairoli walked away from Mantova with his first GP win of the season and with the MX1 red plate which he snatched from team mate Nagl, winner in Bulgaria last weekend. Cairoli’s success marked the first ever triumph in a Motocross GP of a 350cc bike in the likes of the KTM 350 SX-F. The Italian recovered to second in moto one after a bad start but rode an impressive final heat, dominating from the start to the flag.
Rockstar Teka Suzuki World MX1’s Desalle took victory in the opening heat which he started leading after previous leader Philippaerts made a mistake and crashed. In the second moto instead he had to recover from the bottom of the top ten to a final fourth to secure the podium.

Third man on the rostrum was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX1’s Nagl who dropped down to second in the Championship. The German ended third twice in the heats.

Yamaha Monster Energy Ricci’s De Dycker ended fourth overall ahead of a surprising Boog of Kawasaki Racing. The French MX1 debutant even took the holeshot in the second race.

Home rider Philippaerts ended a bitter eight. He was second in heat two but a penalty in the first heat –where he crashed and broke his exhaust pipe- saw him drop down to 19th.

MX2

muquin

Musquin of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing MX2 rolled to his fourth consecutive heat win to take another Grand Prix win. The defending MX2 Champion has been incredible through the first two Grand Prix’s of 2010 and has only missed out on taking a pole so far.

Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Roczen took a solid second place finish as he gave his best to chase Musquin for the overall win in heat one. Towards the last part of the race the German came close to Musquin but could not move past him despite a dramatic last lap.

In the final moto instead it was team mate Herlings to worry Musquin. The 15 year old Dutch made up for his first heat crashes with a solid ride in the final heat, leading from the start to the penultimate lap, but made a mistake in the last lap due to tiredness. Musquin then passed and left Herlings in second, which was enough to secure the Dutchman his first career podium at only the second GP of his career.

Bike-it Cosworth Yamaha UK’s Osborne was fourth overall courtesy of two good rides and Kawasaki CLS’ Frossard was fifth. The French was third in moto one despite a crash –due to a sudden stop of his engine- but crashed at the opening lap of the final heat.

Maddison Jumps Corinth Canal In Greece

Posted by Kacee ON April 12, 2010 • MotoNews1 Comment

Australian freestyle motocross star Robbie Maddison successfully jumped over the 279-foot wide Corinth Canal at height of more than 300 feet above the canal surface in Greece

Red Bull Corinth Gap

CORINTH (Greece) – Freestyle Motocross, with breathtaking tricks such as flips performed at heights of up to three stories high, is one the world’s most dangerous sports. Robbie Maddison is one of the world’s best in FMX.

But that is not enough for the 28-year-old Australian. Maddison is always looking for even greater thrills and has completed a number of spectacular jumps that would have made his idol, pioneering stuntman Evel Knievel, proud. In 2007 and 2008 Maddison set three world records for motorcycle distance jumping all the way to 350 feet. On December 31, 2008, he celebrated New Year’s Eve at Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. in Las Vegas by jumping up 100 feet onto the Arc de Triomphe in front of Paris Las Vegas and then descended off the monument to ground level. Last year, images of Maddison backflipping the Tower Bridge over the Thames River in London while the drawbridge was open went around the world.

Many motocrossers have wanted to jump across the Corinth Canal, which was built in 1893. But the Australian was the first to succeed. He sped his Honda 500 up through a turn-filled approach past a pool, across a soccer pitch and past a chicken coop, no doubt startling the poultry, to a speed of 78 miles per hour. He accelerated up a ramp and flew across the canal gap and landed safely on a mound set up on the other side of the canal. At his height, Maddison was 311 feet above the canal’s surface.

Maddison said getting the approach right despite the constantly changing surfaces – from grass to concrete to wood to asphalt again and then carpet – was difficult enough but there was greater hurdle to the jump: “Overcoming fear, that’s always the hardest part,“ he said. “Jumping across the Corinth Canal has become in my mind a challenge I just could not resist. This jump involved the highest consequences I have faced so far, so the first obstacle I had to overcome was my fear. I believe you have to take risks in life to become wiser and facing a challenge like this will help get me ready for the next feat I will face. I am thrilled I managed to pull it off, as you know there is only one opportunity to get it right!”

Maddo will travel straight from Greece to Mexico City for the season opener of the six-event Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour, this Friday night. Maddison was second overall last year and aims to win the title this year.
